Tachi-Keiko
Initial movements:
- Start by setting up your opponent's position (for Zenken... enime is straight ahead without questioning).
- Walk (Kendo & Iaido walk) up to your opponent (3 step starting with your right feet).
- Begin to draw on the second step (remember to push the sword out instead of pulling).
- Remember to draw to the center.
- Half way drawing, rotate your saya slightly to the left to set up the Nuki-uchi.
- Use Saya-biki to release the sword from Saya. In addition, it is also the energy source to the Nuki-uchi.
- Present Nuki-uchi at the end of the 3rd step (right feet foward).
Nuki-Uchi:
- Nuki-uchi is kind of like a destraction or you can say a technique to destroy your opponent's action.
- Make sure the sword is level to the groud and the sword shouldn't go beyond the opponent's left sholder with Kisaki pointing at the opponent.
- After the Nuki-uchi, simply rotate your right wrist to the left so that the blade is lying flat in front of you to remain pressure point.
- Afterwards, bend your right elbow slightly inwards untill the Kisaki passes your left year.
- When the blade is in the center of your body, raise your left hand and grip the tsuka with proper te no uchi. In addition, furi-kaburi.

Kata #1 Mae
Kata #2 Ushiro
Kata #3 Ukenagaashi
Initial movement:
- turn 90 degree to right, seiza
- When you sit, sit with intensity, as if there’s an opponent sitting in front of you.
- mesuke to the opponent to the left
- Lead your body
- weight on right knee, right toe up, left toe ONLY TO RIGHT KNEE, NOT PASS IT!
- Make sure that your left heel is 45% to your right knee
Transition:
- Draw sword upwards
- Sayabiki to get the sword out
- After the draw, simply match up with opponent’s timing (wait for them to cut).
- Make sure the sword goes straight up (be ware of the height)
- Make sure that your receiving the cut with the shinogi (not the ha)
- Make sure that your receiving the cut with the center of the blade on top of your fore head.
- Once you received the cut, make sure the sword rotates but right hand remain in the same position as you block (link the block and the cut as 1 movement.)
- ground your body and keep low when you recieve the cut (keep your balance as well).
Cut:
- Cutting angle is important (hasuji).
- The location of your opponent is slightly to your left (remember when your in seiza your opponent is 90 degree to your left?).
- Make sure the cut is done by hip turning action instead of arm strength.
- The hand position after the kirioshi should be center (same as you take kammai) but the blade is slightly turned (with an angle after the cutting hasuji).
- left leg should move straight back instead of drawing circle.
Noto:
- After watching your opponent fall off, simply rotate your tsuka by rising the end of the tsuka to the left(so that the monouchi is resting on your right knee).
- left hand is slightly bent and outward (to the left)
- Let go of your right hand and grip the tsuka on top with pinky ring close to the tsuka.
- Place your left hand on the koi-guchi after right hand griped.
- Rotate your right wrist clockwise for noto (the blade rotate accordingly; think of scooping clockwise).
- At the same time as you rotat your right wrist, bring the koi-guchi to the center and meet with right hand.
- In noto position, push the sword out and rotate your right wrist counter clockwise so that your gripping on the front tsuka with proper te no uchi.
- Noto and kneel down with left knee brushing the floor (right feet remain the same).
End:
- Rise up and take a step left to return to your starting position.
- Metsuke restores as soon as you return to the starting position.
note While notoing, you still have to remain your seme because this is the time where you are vonerable. if you sense your opponent is trying to counter, you have to be ready to react him/her/whatever you call it.
And I thought this kata was confusing doing it. I'm even more lost reading ^_^ - Ben
